Getting rid of Big Gbrother

Call it, if you wish, an increasingly uncomfortable feeling of being chaperoned, short of outright eavesdropping or worse. After ten years of running a personal server it was high time to part ways with Big G for good. I decided to opt out of gmail and rely completely on my personal server because I grew increasingly uncomfortable with google reading my emails. It is a matter of privacy. The same apply, it goes without saying, with facebook and other corporate services that in exchange for the little free “convenience” they provide amass disturbing amounts of private data. It is a matter of fundamental liberty: we cannot be free if big brother knows everything about us.

Ho deciso di smettere di usare gmail e fare affidamento su un server personale perché mi sono stancato di vedere come gmail legge tutta la mia corrispondenza. E’ una questione di privacy. Lo stesso vale per facebook e i servizi forniti da altre grandi imprese che in cambio di qualche comodità che ci offrono gratuitamente ammassano inquietanti moli di dati privati. E’ una questione di libertà fondamentali: non possiamo essere liberi se il grande fratello sa tutto di noi.

Parafrasando un verso di Fabrizio De Andre’:

eravamo gli ultimi cittadini liberi
di questa famosa città civile
perché avevamo un server nel cortile”
